One of the highest mountain parks in the world, it includes the world's third highest peak. Because of its formidable location, the park has remained untouched ecologically and provides natural protection to its fauna and flora. The extremely rugged mountain area with deep escarpments and plateaus in certain areas of the park are still not fully explored; and the possibility of discovering new species of flora and fauna in these regions cannot be ruled out.

The Dzongri trek passes trough the park.

Ferns, bamboo, wild orchids, rhododendron. Serow, goral, barking deer, Himalayan black bear, red panda, weasels, martens, leopard cat, marbled cat, civets and binturongs. Pheasants, eg the Satyr Trapogan, the Kalij pheasant and hill partridges. Also varieties of owl, black eagle, green pigeon, slaty-headed parakeet, yellow backed sunbird,  collared broadbill, maroon oriole, bulbuls, laughing thrushes and titmice.

Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary

Above the town of Rabongla in southern Sikkim. There is a beautiful one day trek trough this forest to Maenam top and Bhaledunga.
